Synopsis

The Musical play, "WHAT IF..." is set is the Village of Islamorada, located in the Florida Keys. The show opens with two sets sharing a split stage. On the right we have Mrs. Becker's Bed and Breakfast. To the left is the Old Smokey Bar. The sets remain through both acts. Some songs are delivered in front of the sets, center stage.

The two main charaters are Catherine Becker, the owner of the Bed and Breakfast and Alan, the owner of the Old Smokey Bar. These two met over thirty years ago, while in Paris. He was in the U.S. Army and she was attending cooking school. They had a "meaningful" fling and fell in love. Both had to leave, he to report back to the Army and she to return home and break her engagement. However, they made a date to meet in Martinique. As the plot unfolds, the meeting never took place and now, these many years later, both live a reclusive life. However, unbeknowst to them, they live only a short distance apart. Through detective work on the part of the other characters they each discover the close proximity of the other. Age and time has changed them both. Can they find the courage to meet each other again?

The other characters in this tableau are Ellie, Mrs. Becker's assistant and Michael, a Junior College student who does the handyman work to pay for his rent at the B&B. They are freshly in love. Another tenant, Paula, is a woman involved in any cause that has a meaning. She writes letters to congressmen and CEOs jumping at any chance to "better the world we live in". Then there is Sam, a charter boat captain typical of the many captains that live and work in the Florida Keys. He is suntanned, long hair covers his ears to keep the sun off, wears sunglasses and a cap and thinks of little else but fishing and having a cold beer.

Alan, an ex-soldier, owns the Old Smoky Bar. His bar is his whole world. Herbie and Sister are two barflies that spend every moment at the bar. They have been together for years. Jacquie is the waitress and the sister of Ellie. She has a very active love life. This is the connection between Mrs. Becker and Alan. The songwriter, Frank, occupies a stool most of the time and writes his music. He is just beginning to sell a few jingles and is Alan's confidant. He is in love with Jacquie, but she isn't interested.

This mix of unlike characters and the songs create a unique theatre experience. The plot takes several surprising turns.
